What is clean eating?
These days, ‘Clean Eating’ has become a buzz phrase used and abused by many. For me, Clean Eating is effectively about going back to nature, about eating only real, fresh organic food. Clean Eating originates from a time when our food industry didn’t put such huge volumes of processed food so conveniently onto our supermarket shelves – a time when our foods were free of chemicals such as fertilisers, preservatives and additives and when genetic modification wasn’t in use to increase the profitability of product lines.
We should look to limit our intake of food that comes with a label or is in a box or package.
Clean Eating should be about eating unrefined, fresh, wholesome food, made at home from organic ingredients that haven’t been altered from the way nature intended. Also, such foods aren’t supposed to last for months in your cupboard, losing their nutritional value every day! Clean Eating is free of the toxins mostly found in sugar, alcohol, excess caffeine, processed foods, hydrogenated fats and ready meals. You have to remember your body will never be healthy, nourished and lean unless it is clean.
How to become a Clean Eater?
Just replace those readymade processed foods that have been laced with all sorts of chemicals, as well as excessive quantities of salt and sugar (including items ending with …‘ose’ – such as glucose, fructose, sucrose and lactose), with fresh, organic nutritious food which you buy in season from your local farm shop or market. Choose chicken and eggs which are free-range, antibiotic-free and cage-free. Beef should be grass-fed and fish should be fresh and caught wild. Choose your items with care, go for quality not quantity, so that you can cook balanced and healthy meals. Wash your food and enjoy its natural colour; prepare and cook it, taste and smell its goodness. Enjoy eating it knowing that you are taking care of your body with every bite that you take. With this simple change in mindset and a little bit of willpower, the year ahead could turn out to be your healthiest ever. Just take it one step at a time.
What are the benefits?
The benefits will range from an increase in health and energy, to saving your life. Various beneficial patterns have emerged, such as clearer, glowing skin and a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and strokes. Your hair will become more shiny and radiant. Your mood will stabilise and your clarity of thought will be noticeably sharper. Your immunity to illness will improve and you will sleep more soundly at night. Your cholesterol, blood sugar and body fat readings will slowly go down to normal levels. You might even reduce your shopping bill as you avoid expensive and fancy processed meals. Finally, when you are Clean, it will be easier for you to have the physique of your dreams and look muscular, super-fit and lean, if you so wish.
Living whole and well
My mission for 2017 is all about helping my clients to cook more and become healthier, happier and a more energised version of themselves. I will also help my clients with shopping guides that will help them navigate their grocery shopping and choose their fruit and vegetables, their carbohydrates, what will be in their fridge, freezer and storecupboard. I’ll be advising them on which protein sources to select (animal vs plant). I will be advocating the kind of food they should purchase – fresh, organic – as much as possible. I will also help them plan and cook their meals.
Throughout the last 18 months, I have been buying fresh organic groceries from my local farm shop and Bath market. Most of the meals I posted on Instagram, Facebook and my website during this period were gluten-free, included different sources of protein, were delicious and healthy. They were simple recipes made from clean, lean organic ingredients.
